Management of the invasive plant (Opuntia stricta)

Forestry PS Mr Gitonga Mugambi today visited the Laikipia Permaculture Centre Trust (LPCT) to familiarise on the management of the invasive plant (Opuntia stricta) through promoting its utilization to produce high value products .

The PS was taken through different agro-processing facilities where various products are produced including juice, wines and oils from the invasive plant Opuntia that has had severe impacts on the biodiversity and livelihoods of the community especially reduction in grazing areas.

The organization has developed a customized curriculum aimed at enabling communities in Laikipia to improve highly degraded land by adopting practices including water harvesting and agro forestry .
