Workshop in Naivasha Focuses on Finalizing National Biodiversity Targets
Naivasha, 22nd July 2024 – Today marked the commencement of a pivotal workshop at Naivasha Resort, aimed at finalizing Kenya's National Biodiversity Targets for the National Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) . The workshop, running from 22nd to 26th July 2024, was inaugurated with keynote remarks from representatives of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry.
In his opening address, the IUCN representative emphasized the global significance of the NBSAP and lauded Kenya's proactive steps towards biodiversity conservation. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development highlighted the interconnection between sustainable agricultural practices and biodiversity preservation. The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry underscored the urgency of finalizing national targets ahead of the 1st August 2024 deadline set by the Conference of the Parties (COP).
"We are pleased to invite you to a crucial workshop aimed at finalizing the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) targets," stated the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry. "The Conference of the Parties has issued a notification to parties stating that national targets submitted by August 1, 2024, will be included in the documentation for the fifth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation and the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties. Kenya aims to meet this timeline."
The workshop has brought together key stakeholders and experts to refine and finalize Kenya's biodiversity targets. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that Kenya's NBSAP aligns with international commitments and addresses the country's unique environmental challenges.
A significant highlight of the event is the launch of the BIODEV2030 Phase 2 Project, which aims to enhance biodiversity conservation efforts through innovative and sustainable practices. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in achieving the NBSAP targets and promoting sustainable development in Kenya.
