Public Participation forums conclude in Nyeri, Kisumu and Garissa Counties

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION FORUMS CONCLUDE IN NYERI, KISUMU AND GARISSA COUNTIES

Public participation exercises on the Draft Regulations under the Forest Conservation and Management Act, CAP 385 and the Forest Conservation and Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, concluded today in Nyeri, Kisumu, and Garissa Counties.

Over the past three days, stakeholders were sensitized and discussions held on the eight (Image removed. Draft Regulations under the Forest Conservation and Management Act, Cap 385. These discussions culminated in a deeper engagement on the proposed Forest Conservation and Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The Bill seeks to modernize the legal framework for forest conservation by aligning it with current realities, global forestry practices, and Kenya’s environmental commitments. It also ensures consistency with the Constitution of Kenya.

The Forest Conservation and Management Act, 2016, remains the principal law guiding forest governance. Enacted to give effect to Article 69 of the Constitution, it promotes sustainable development, conservation, and rational use of forest resources for national growth.

The proposed amendments address emerging challenges and gaps within the sector, as outlined in the National Forest Policy, 2023. Among the key proposals is the integration of the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) into the Act, bringing all key forestry institutions under one legal framework for improved coordination and resource management.

The stakeholders across the regions actively engaged in the forums, sharing their views, raising concerns, and contributing valuable insights on the proposed regulations.

Next week, the forums will continue in the following regions:

These sessions will run from 8th to 10th April 2025.

Stakeholders are encouraged to attend and share their views to help shape the future of forest conservation and management in Kenya.
