The WRTI is therefore a legal corporate entity with the mandate to undertake and coordinate wildlife research and training in the country. In an effort to enhance government service delivery, Executive Order No. 1 of 2018 provides for
the placement of the WRTI as an institution under the State Department for Wildlife in the Ministry of Tourism
and Wildlife. This now reamplifies wildlife research and professional skill development as key pillars in the
achievement of Vision 2030 and the Government of Kenya Big Four Agenda.
To effectively perform its functions, and as required by law, WRTI is subject to prior registration by the National
Commission for Science, Technology and Innovations (NACOSTI) as a research institution, whereas the training
component is subject to regulation by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
