Two national targets have been derived from this Global Target ensuring that, Indigenous peoples and local communities have a cultural and holistic understanding of nature based on their traditional knowledge, practices and innovation. This information and understanding of biodiversity in turn play a crucial role in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. National Target 22.1 underscores the importance of representation, participation, and access to justice and information for diverse groups, including indigenous peoples, local communities, women, girls, children, youth, and persons with disabilities. This target addresses the multifaceted nature of inclusivity and recognizes the unique challenges and rights associated with each demographic. On the other hand, National Target 22.2 specifically looks at the safety and rights of individuals and organizations actively engaged in advocating for biodiversity conservation. This distinct focus acknowledges the critical role of environmental human rights defenders and recognizes the potential risks and challenges they face.
By 2030, ensure the full, equitable, inclusive, effective and gender-responsive representation and participation in decision-making processes, and access to justice and information related to biodiversity of indigenous peoples and local communities, women and girls, children and youth, and persons with disabilities in conservation efforts while respecting their cultural rights and land ownership territories, resources, and traditional knowledge and ensuring the safety and rights of individuals and organizations actively engaged in advocating for biodiversity conservation
