Kenya’s 36% Figure (UN 2023 Report)

  • Source: The Progress on Transboundary Water Cooperation: Mid-term Status of SDG Indicator 6.5.2, 2024 (UNECE & UNESCO, published October 2024, based on 2023 data) reports that Kenya has 36% of its transboundary basin area covered by operational arrangements for water cooperation. This is also reflected on the SDG 6 Data Portal (sdg6data.org), stating "36% of transboundary basin area has an operational arrangement for water cooperation (SDG indicator 6.5.2, 2023)."

  • Implication: Out of Kenya’s total transboundary basin area (estimated at 141,000-152,000 km²), approximately 52,740 km² (using the midpoint of 146,500 km² × 0.36) is under operational arrangements.
