Empowering Communities Through Forest Conservation and Livelihood Support.
The County Forest Conservator for Machakos County, Madam Milcah Mutua, led a multi-sectoral team in overseeing the issuance of 12 Sahiwal dairy cows to Kwa Muvuno Forest Farmer Business School (FFBS) in Mwala Sub-County, a beneficiary of the Green Zones Development Support Project (GZDSP).
The 36-member FFBS group was organized into 12 sub-groups, each jointly managing one cow and sharing ownership of the calves. This approach promotes equity, accountability, and long-term sustainability. Prior to issuance, all cows were inspected, quarantined, treated, and ear-tagged to ensure animal health, biosecurity, and traceability.
In addition to livestock support, the group has benefited from capacity-building interventions that enabled the establishment of a tree nursery with 54,600 assorted seedlings, reinforcing forest conservation while diversifying livelihoods.
Implemented under Component 1: Forest Conservation and Livelihood Support for Climate Change Resilience, the initiative is enhancing household incomes, improving food security, and strengthening community resilience, while supporting sustainable forest management and local economic growth in Machakos County.
